Glycol distearate is produced by the esterification of stearic acid or its esters with ethylene glycol. It comes in the form of a waxy white solid cream that is used to condition the skin or hair. It is also used as a thickener and gives creams a pearly appearance. The ingredient can come from either animal origin (cows, pigs ...) or from plants such as soybean oil and canola oil.
