Namely Thioglycolic acid modifies the hair fibers to facilitate their restructuring: it is used, for example, in hair restructuring products. It is also used to chemically decompose unwanted hair so that it can then be removed by simply wiping it off. It is its potassium salt which is the most used today.

The restrictions are dependent on the use of the ingredient in:
a) Products for curling or straightening hair
b) Depilatories
c) Other hair products to rinse
(d) Products intended for permanent lashes

The maximum permitted concentrations are:
a) i) 8% (in thioglycolic acid) for general use ready to use pH 7 to 9.5 and ii) 11% for ready-to-use professional use pH 7 to 9.5
b) 5% (in thioglycolic acid) ready for use pH 7 to 12.7
c) 2% (in thioglycolic acid) ready for use pH 7 to 9.5
d) 11% (thioglycolic acid) for professional use ready to use pH 7 to 9.5

  • Antioxidant : Inhibits reactions favored by oxygen, thus avoiding oxidation and rancidity
  • Depilatory : Removes unwanted hair
  • Hair waving or straightening : Modifies the chemical structure of the hair, to style it in the required style
  • Reducing : Changes the chemical nature of another substance by adding hydrogen or removing the oxygen
