Benzoic acid is used as a preservative in cosmetics. It is present naturally in the benzoin gum extracted from "Styrax" type trees, but is "unfortunately" often made in the laboratory from other chemicals. In food, it is used under the name E210. Benzoic acid is allowed in organic. It can irritate the eyes, skin, lungs and digestive tract, but generally does not pose a problem in regulatory concentrations.
