Namely Propylene Glycol is an organic compound (Dialcool) made by hydration of propylene oxide. It occurs naturally in sesame seeds and mushrooms. It is used as a humectant, solvent or binder in cosmetic products. It helps other ingredients to penetrate the skin. Propylene Glycol is the main ingredient in electronic cigarettes.

Propanediol (1,3-propanediol) and propylene glycol (1,2-propanediol) share the same empirical formula (C3H8O2), but their molecular structure is different.
Its functions (INCI)
  • Humectant : Maintains water content of a cosmetic both in its packaging and on the skin
  • Masking : Reduces or inhibits the odor or basic taste of the product
  • Solvent : Dissolves other substances
  • Viscosity controlling : Increases or decreases the viscosity of cosmetics
  • Skin conditioning - humectant : Increasing the water content of the top layers of the skin. Humectants are primarily hygroscopic agents drawing moisture from the surrounding air.
  • Skin conditioning - miscellaneous : Improving the appearance of dry and/or damaged skin by reducing flaking and restoring its suppleness.
