Xanthan gum is used in cosmetics as an emulsion stabilizer, film-forming agent or binder. It is obtained by the fermentation of a carbohydrate (for example glucose) with the bacterium Xanthomonas campestris. It is authorized in Bio.
A 2016 study of the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) on microbial polysaccharide gums, of which Xanthan gum is a part, concludes that the ingredient is safe.
