Namely Eugenol is a phenolic aromatic compound naturally present in particular in cloves. It is used in the manufacture of vanillin and is used in cosmetics as a flavoring agent. It is used in dentistry as an analgesic, is used in surgical cements and some dental pastes. It also has antiseptic powers, in the United States for example, it is used as a pesticide, classified in the list of "minimum risk pesticides". It is one of the 24 allergens regulated by Europe.

The presence of the substance shall be indicated in the list of ingredients referred to in Article 19 (1) (g) when its concentration is greater:
- to 0,001% in products without rinsing
- to 0,01% in the products to be rinsed
