This ingredient is used in permanent dyes as a hair dye. This ingredient has a strong sensitizing ability.
In 2006, the SCCS concluded on this ingredient by stating: "
The SCCP is of the opinion that the use of 6-hydroxyindole itself as an oxidation dye for hair maximum concentration of 0.5% in the finished cosmetic product (after mixing with hydrogen peroxide) does not present any risk to consumer health, apart from its sensitization potential. Genotoxicity / mutagenicity studies in finished hair dye formulations shall be undertaken in accordance with the relevant advice of the SCCNFP and in accordance with its guidance notes. "

After mixing under oxidative conditions, the maximum content applied to the hair should not exceed 0.5%.
