Sorbitol is a polyol which is in the form of a white, sweet crystalline powder. It is used mainly as a moisturizer in dental hygiene products, to help the paste retain its fluid appearance after opening, but also for its non-cariogenic sweetening power (does not generate any tooth decay unlike sugar). It is found quite frequently for the same reason in moisturizing creams. In food, it is found as an additive under the name E420 or as a sweetener for diabetics.
Industrially, Sorbitol is obtained for example by the hydrogenation of a corn syrup or glucose. It is naturally found in many fruits such as plums, apples and cherries
