Sodium bicarbonate or monosodium carbonate is naturally present in some mineral waters. On an industrial scale, it is produced from limestone, salt and ammonia (Solvay process). It is used in cosmetics for its abrasive properties and anti-bacterial properties. For these reasons, there are many toothpastes and dental hygiene products. It is also used to reduce volatile sulfur compounds that cause bad breath.
