Namely Dihydroxyacetone or DHA is present in the form of a white crystalline powder. It is used in the formulation of self-tanning products and personal care products, good-mine type for example. DHA induces a coloration of the upper layers of the skin by reacting with the amino acids, and this happens without the sun and without risk to health.

DHA is regulated in Europe and can be used in the following cases:
a) In non-oxidising hair dyes up to 6.25%
b) In self-tanners up to 10%.
