Namely Ammonia is mostly used for hair coloring acting as an alkaline agent. It allows to open the scales of the cuticle of the hair, which then facilitates the permanent coloring. Ammonia is an aqueous solution produced from ammonia gas.
 
The substance is toxic to the environment.

The maximum concentration allowed in cosmetic products:
6% NH3
