Boric acid prevents or delays bacterial growth and thus protects cosmetics and personal care products from bacteria. It is also used to regulate the pH of formulas, or to thicken certain products. It also has astringent properties (tightens the pores).

This ingredient is banned in cosmetics in Europe from 12 June 2019.
