Namely Alcohol, also called ethanol, is a colorless liquid with a strong odor. It is used in cosmetics for its antimicrobial properties with a broad spectrum (antifungal, antiviral and antibacterial). It is also used in many other cases as a preservative, solvent or to reduce perspiration in deodorants.

Although it is not regulated in cosmetics, many cases of possible irritation are nonetheless reported with alcohol (skin, mucous membrane, lung, eyes ...).
