Sodium lactate is the sodium salt of lactic acid, a type of alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA). It is produced by the fermentation of sugars, e.g. from corn or sugar beet. It contains no milk proteins. It can therefore be used by people with a milk allergy or lactose intolerance. It is used as a food additive under the name E325. It is used in cosmetics for its antioxidant, antimicrobial and moisturizing properties.
