Potassium nitrate is in the form of white crystals with pungent and bitter taste. It is naturally present in "natural nitrates" in India or Egypt, but is produced industrially by the action of potassium chloride on sodium nitrate. Potassium nitrate is mainly found in toothpastes intended to prevent dentinal hypersensitivity.
